Box Tops for Education
Parents and Students – Collect those Box Tops all summer long! A letter was sent home along with a collection sheet for you to use over the summer (a baggie is fine too). The grade bringing in the most Box Tops the first week of school will earn an awesome class party! Please be sure to trim the Box Tops along the pink line, if the expiration date is cut or torn off we cannot redeem it.
The Box Tops for Education program is an important way we can earn money to support our school library. Mrs. McLean relies on this program, along with the Book Fair, to purchase books for our library. Our goal is to collect 30,000 Box Tops ($3000) for the 2016-2017 school year. With everyone’s help we can do it! To help support our goals, Sam’s Club is currently running a promotion for 100 free eBox Tops if you purchase 3 participating products in one transaction. http://www.boxtops4education.com/earn/in-store-offers. Also, if you create an account on the Box Tops for Education page, you have access to printable and digital coupons for Box Tops products http://www.boxtops4education.com/coupons
In addition, we have a new Box Tops website just for OHES where you can access additional collection sheets, see how many Box Tops each class has collected throughout the year, and other information on the program. Check it out at http://oheslmc.weebly.com/box-tops.html
Parents & Community members – we are currently seeking donations for the monthly and grand prize winners. If you or a business you know would like to donate prizes, in any amount, please contact one of the Box Tops Coordinators.

Matt was a very successful student at St. Francis who received a full-ride scholarship for baseball to the University of Toledo. An Officer from D.A.R.T. will join Matt to discuss the heroin and opiate addiction that has plagued our nation and is hitting in our own back yards. Learn how they are helping those fighting this epidemic.According to the D.A.R.T website: “Last year alone, 150 people in the Toledo area died of heroin-related overdoses–four times as many as in 2012.” Also, D.A.R.T. has a “caseload of nearly 200 and more clients added daily.”

Unfortunately, addiction knows no boundaries and our neighbors, friends, and family members are exposed to this unfortunate epidemic daily. The goal of Team Recovery and D.A.R.T. is to raise awareness about the dangers associated with heroin and other drug usage, how it originated, and what you need to know to protect your own family.

April 4 Update

OHSPA HappeningsGreen Bear Ball a Record-breaking Success

Thank you to all who made this year’s Green Bear Ball a success! A special thanks goes to Green Bear Ball Chairs Kathy Lathrop and Jackie Berenzweig, who wish to share, “We extend a very heartfelt thank you to the 22 amazing women who worked on the steering committee, organizing everything from the evening’s logistics, transportation and entertainment, to managing the live and silent auction, student art, ticket sales, advertising sales, program book, publicity, raffle, and alumni outreach.”

Two-thirds of the $125,000 revenue raised by the Green Bear Ball will be used to fund the creation of the land lab to be located at the elementary school. All 81 pavers were sold, and there is just one bench remaining. If you are interested in supporting the land lab by purchasing this final bench, please contact Jackie Berenzweig at 419-345-5161. Ground breaking for the land lab is expected to occur in late April, with a goal of having a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new outdoor educational resource the first week of June.

The second project is the upgrading and replacement of microscopes for science classes in grades 7 through 12 to enhance the curriculum in junior high science, biology, anatomy and physiology, botany, zoology, and physics classes. New equipment will include three classroom sets of microscopes, including one set of digital microscopes, which will allow students to transfer pictures directly to their computers, one set of stereoscopes for research and dissection, and one telescope for the science department. Every student in the Junior/Senior High School will benefit from the improved capabilities in the science labs. The remaining one-third of the money raised will be allocated to the Boosters to support Ottawa Hills athletics.

March 13 Update

OHSPA Happenings

The Green Bear Ball is fast approaching, and while we prepare for a wonderful evening with friends and neighbors, it’s a great time to reflect on why we are GBB logoworking so hard to make the event a success.  It certainly takes a village to plan and execute the Green Bear Ball, and so it comes as no surprise that our village has also come together to design, build, and plant one of the exciting new projects funded by the proceeds of the Ball. This summer at the elementary school we will be building a land lab, a beautiful space for kids to learn and engage with nature in a hands-on environment. The garden-type setting will provide an opportunity for students to plant, care for, and study seasonal vegetables and native plants.  The concept of the land lab was designed by Village resident Todd Kime, of Kimeland labDesigns LLC, and will be constructed by Village resident and Ottawa Hills alumni Rich Effler, of Valle Homes.

For advice on what to plant and how to properly care for these seasonal vegetables and native plants, who better to turn to than Village resident and Executive Director of The Toledo Botanical Gardens, Karen Ranney Wolkins.  There is much to learn from the Toledo Botanical Gardens and its Toledo Grown project. Our children’s education will be enriched by understanding the importance that community gardens have on neighborhoods and the health benefits of eating farm to table style right from their school garden.

At the Green Bear Ball, Chef Erika Rapp of the Registry Bistro will be incorporating locally grown produce, donated from the Toledo Botanical Garden’s Urban Farm campus, into the evening’s menu. Enjoy Toledo Grown vegetables and herbs, while knowing that you’re reducing your carbonTBG logofootprint, nourishing powerful pollinators, and helping to strengthen our local economy. Land Lab lessons will be endless and the Green Bear Ball is only the beginning! Look for this logo to know that you’ve done your part!

It takes a village to help bring new opportunities to our Ottawa Hills Schools and our children. If you haven’t yet purchased your tickets to the Green Bear Ball, please do so now!  Tickets can be purchased at https://qtego.net/qlink/gbb.  If you are unable to attend, but are interested in supporting the new land lab, please consider making a direct donation or purchasing a paver or bench to be engraved, through the Green Bear Ball site at https://qtego.net/qlink/gbb.

OHSPA’s Dollars at Work
Diane Drabek’s math classes used the classroom set of CBRs, just one of the many items purchased with funds from OHSPA, last week to graph distance vs. time of a bouncing ball to see how it relates to quadratic functions. Diane says thanks to OHSPA, everyone had a “hands-on” experience! Here are some action shots of her students putting their new equipment to the test.

If your child will be five years old by Aug. 1, 2016, and plans to start kindergarten at Ottawa Hills Elementary School in fall 2016, please call the school office at 419.536.8329 as soon as possible with your student information. Once your name is on file, you will receive mailings about kindergarten registration, orientation meetings and kindergarten screening. We would also like to invite parents of incoming kindergarteners to a parent meeting Feb. 22 at 1 p.m. in OHES’s old gym. If you know families who are considering Ottawa Hills Elementary School for their children, please encourage them to attend. Parents will meet the kindergarten teachers, get an inside look into the kindergarten classroom, and about ways to get involved in Ottawa Hills Local Schools.  Parents are welcome to stay after the meeting for a brief building tour.

Hot Lunch Deadline, TODAYburger
The deadline to place orders for February hot lunches is Sun., Jan. 24. Lunch orders for both elementary and jr./sr. high students can be placed directly through Hot Lunch Online. Be sure to include items from Earth to Oven in your lunch orders, too. Earth to Oven owner operators use sustainable, locally sourced products like organic sugar and flour and buy their eggs, butter and milk from independent Calder Dairy & Farm. Earth to Oven uses plant-based food coloring, and the packaging the company uses for its cookies, old-fashioned buckles and oatmeal bars is compostable and easily disintegrates.

Final Chance for Senior Yearbook Ad
Parents of seniors have one last opportunity to purchase a senior ad letting your son or daughter know how proud you are of accomplishments. We will accept payment, photos, and wording until Mon., Feb. 1 only.
